A Shared Eco Picnic: Inspired by 30 Years of The Cook’s Companion

Thirty years ago, The Cook’s Companion changed the way we eat, teaching us to love the ingredients and the seasons. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this “kitchen bible,” you’re invited to a facilitated, relaxed picnic centered on community combined with treading lightly.

As author and cook Stephanie Alexander writes: “The over-riding principles of choosing… local rather than long-travelled and premium rather than tired produce should result in the foods with the best flavour.”

By coming together, we’re practicing sustainability in the most delicious way – cooking from a book that helps home cooks use “what’s growing now” and focusing on whole ingredients rather than ultra-processed foods. It’s an opportunity to enjoy the shared wisdom and skills of local home cooks for the love of eating food that has a lighter impact on the planet.

This is a plastic-free event, showing that picnics and large gatherings don’t need to leave a trace. Whether you’re a lifelong lover of Stephanie Alexander or simply a lover of real food, come share a plate, tell a story, and help us show that home cooking is as gentle on the planet as it is good for the soul.

Date: Thursday 26th March 2026
Time: 9.45am – 11.45am
Location: On the grounds of Saint John’s Anglican Church (Cooks Hill NSW)

The Secret Ingredients of a Sustainable Cafe

Disposable coffee cups are the most visible sign of a cafe’s sustainability footprint, but they are just the beginning. True cafe sustainability needs a wholistic and intentional approach – from strategic menu planning, food waste reduction, cafe location, facility logistics, plus the staffing.

We welcome you to a purposeful conversation with Bec Bowie at Local Customs Adamstown. As a hospitality educator and the former owner of Estabar, Bec brings her two decades of experience about navigating the hospitality industry’s sustainability challenges and successes. Join us for a behind-the-scenes talk at how local cafes are evolving and learn how your cafe experience can play a part in a greener future.

Date: Tuesday 21st April 2026
Time: 8.30am – 11am
Venue: Local Customs Adamstown
